Look out for set decoration by Art Department’s Kate Goodman on sports comedy-drama series, Ted Lasso, which scooped Designer Paul Cripps and his team a nomination for Outstanding Production Design: Narrative Program (Half Hour), 2022. Season 2 was Kate’s first series as Set Decorator and the nominated episode, Beard After Hours was one of her favourites to work on so far. The series also received nominations for Best Comedy, while cast members Jason Sudekis, Juno Temple, and Hannah Waddingham each earned nominations.

In the 74th annual Emmy Awards, Apple +’s Ted Lasso came second with 20 nominations, alongside HBO’s White Lotus, and just behind HBO’s Succession with 25. Commenting on the first series for entertainment website, Deadline, Paul Cripps is quoted as saying “the comedy writing was so good that I felt we had to kind of create a real world that the characters fit into and inhabit… So, we went for quite a bit of reality in order to make the comedy work, but also to make the more heartfelt moments of the show work, it had to feel like real situations and real relationships.” To achieve this realism, Cripps used a mixture of set builds, location scouting, and post-production work.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the TV Academy has changed the way it groups nominations. This year for the first time, the awards branch “declined to break out individual tallies by platform altogether”. HBO outperformed Netflix with 108 nominations, just ahead of Netflix’s 105. Together with its streaming platform HBO Max, it leads all conglomerates with a total of 140 Emmy nominations.

Content Chief at HBO and HBO Max, Casey Bloys said: “This is a testament to the amazing talent in front of and behind the camera as well as our gifted programming teams. Their commitment to creative excellence continues to break through to audiences in a meaningful way.”

In a quickly changing media landscape consolidation continues to play a major role—recent deals include Discovery’s Warner Bros. acquisition as well as Amazon’s MGM deal. Before the pandemic, Disney acquired Fox’s massive library, and a controlling stake in Hulu. Netflix had a higher number of programmes that scored Emmy nominations with 35, followed by 18 for HBO and six for HBO Max.

The Emmy Awards goes live on Monday 12 September in Los Angeles 8-11pm ET (5-8pm PT).
