Andrew Williamson
CONCEPT DESIGNER AND VFX ART DIRECTOR
Andrew is a concept artist/designer and VFX art director. He qualified as an architect at Cambridge University, where he also designed sets and graphics for numerous theatre productions, frequently collaborating with Dominic Dromgoole, later artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe.
After an architectural stint which included working on the British Library at Euston, he turned full-time to illustration before being recruited by Stuart Craig to join the art department for ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ as a concept artist. He remained for the duration of the franchise, alongside working on other high-profile film projects including ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and ‘Gravity’. He was an early adopter of the use of 3D techniques in concept art.
Andrew Joined the VFX facility DNEG in 2011, where he founded and headed the company’s art department, and acted as DNEG’s VFX art director on ‘Thor: the Dark World’, besides supervising concept work on many of the company’s projects.
In publishing, “Harry Potter: A Pop-up Book: Based on the Film Phenomenon” , which he illustrated, was the winner of a gold medal in the IP Book Awards in the US.
