Emily Beatty

As a student I was inspired, among others, by Es Devlin. She is still a big influence for me, I like the way she picks up her client’s personalities and style and gives it physical expression, like the set she designed for the Miley Cyrus Bangers tour where she turned Miley’s tongue into a fibre glass slide.

I started in set design for fashion, working on campaigns and editorials for a wide variety of designers as a freelancer, I also worked on a couple of music videos in this time. With the wide range of designers I have worked for so far, I am starting to appreciate how many different ways there are of doing things. My recent experience working in film, has made clearer to me what I was so excited by in Es Devlin’s work. I love the fact that the design starts with the script and I have enjoyed learning how to translate verbal expression into visual expression, so that the design of the set becomes a tool to help the viewer understand who the character is.

I am really looking forward to gaining more experience and understanding how each designer develops their signature style while remaining responsive to the story’s needs. I really enjoy the energy of working in a team, I like the buzz and drama of meeting deadlines and the practicality of making things.
